Folio from a Ramayana. Rama and Lakshmana defend sage Vishvamitra from demons. Basohli, circa early 19th century.

Opaque watercolour with gold onwarqa. 15.1 x 23.7cm.
At the ashram of sage Vishvamitra where Rama and Lakshmana
were called join their guru in yajna (fire sacrifice) and to protect the
ceremony from the rakshasas (demons) Subharu and Mareecha who lately had
constantly harrassed Vishvamitra and local sages. When once more they fly in to
disrupt the ritual and desecrate the site, Rama and Laskshmana dispense justice
and restore order by using the sacred weapons gifted by their spiritual
teacher.
